Gaming Remaster and What It Normally Means for Old Titles

May 19, 2025 / by Louigi Balao / 3 mins read

Nostalgia can be hard to resist, which is why the gaming community enjoys revisiting classic games. However, for gamers, this nostalgia can sometimes mean confronting the frustrations of the past. This is where remasters come into play. If you've heard about a beloved old game receiving a "remaster," you might wonder what that means. Let's explore what a remaster typically entails for the classic titles we grew up loving.

Same, same, but also new

Think of it this way, a remaster is about giving an old game a visual upgrade—a slap of life if you will—all while keeping its core mechanics relatively the same. The game you loved is still there, but with updated graphics that make it more appealing for modern gamers. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD or Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster brought the original titles back with crisper visuals and smoother animations. It’s the same adventure but with a visually better experience.

Quality of life upgrades

Aside from graphics, remasters often add “quality of life” improvements—changes that make the game more enjoyable without altering the simple core. These can include faster loading times, revamped menus, improved controls, or even some added content. A great example of this is Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which kept the classic gameplay while tweaking the camera controls and modernizing the game’s feel to meet today’s standards. This made me smile because I loved the original PS1; I played that game to death! So, seeing its awesome remake in all its glory kindled the young gamer in me.

Audio enhancements

One often overlooked aspect of remasters is audio. Older games might have had compressed or lower-quality soundtracks, but with modern remasters, the music and sound effects are often remastered to sound fuller and richer. This can make a massive difference in bringing a game's atmosphere back to life. Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a prime example, where the original music was re-recorded to provide a more immersive experience.

As long as it keeps its essence

While remasters breathe new life into old games, it’s important to remember that they aim to keep the original feel and nostalgia intact. They aren’t trying to reinvent the game from scratch like a remake would (which is a whole different topic). Instead, they allow us to relive the classics we love with a few modern twists.

So, if you ever see a remastered version of your favorite game, know it’s a great opportunity to experience that old magic again. But now, since you are a little older and perhaps have more disposable income, it may also be great to enjoy these new remakes with minor upgrades.
