How to Safely Dispose of Your Dead Powerbank

Your phone’s last lifeline dies! Here’s how to dispose it

It has finally happened. That once-mighty powerbank that saved your phone’s life during your amazing holiday or long commutes has finally perished. It gave everything it had, until it didn’t. So now what? Do you give it a Viking funeral? Bury it next to your old earphones? Toss it in the bin with banana peels?

Let’s not. It should be disposed of properly.

Powerbanks, like most electronics, contain lithium-ion batteries, meaning they’re classified as e-waste. And if there’s one thing you shouldn’t do, it’s tossing a dead battery into your regular trash. Not only is that bad for the environment, but it also poses a fire risk.

Check if it’s truly dead. Make sure it’s not just a charging cable issue. Try a different cable or adapter. If your powerbank still doesn’t charge or hold power, then yes—it’s time.

In the Philippines, a lot of malls (SM, Ayala, etc.) now have e-waste bins or booths, so make sure to look for proper e-waste bins. They’re usually located near entrances or customer service counters. You can also check with your barangay office or local LGU if they have scheduled e-waste pickups or drop-offs. Some electronics shops also accept dead devices for proper disposal.

Tape the terminals. Sounds extra, but putting electrical tape on the metal parts (the input/output ports) reduces the risk of accidental discharge or fire.

Finally, never hoard more electrical items. It’s tempting to keep old powerbanks, broken chargers, and mystery cables in a drawer “just in case,” but you’re basically building a fire hazard starter pack. Old electronics, especially batteries, can degrade and leak over time. Decluttering is free therapy anyway.

And when you’re finally ready for a replacement, might we recommend something a little more alive? The Crabtek Wireless Power Bank 10,000mAh not only lasts long, but it charges fast, looks sleek with its rubberized grip, and supports wireless charging for maximum convenience.
