Passing the Controller: Experienced Tips to Give Young Gamers

We can’t stay young forever, so we might as well give you some advice you can use!

Look, I may only be in my late twenties, but my knees pop when I crouch and my back aches after a few matches of Tekken 8—so yeah, I feel like an old gamer. And with age comes wisdom, or at least accumulated experience from hundreds of hours, from not only me, but also other older gamers.

So, for the younger generation dipping their toes into gaming, allow me to pass the controller along with a few hard-learned tips.

Get used to playing alone

Yes, I know, quite a grim opening. But hear me out. A lot of us started gaming because of friends, especially during the pandemic boom. Game nights and multiplayer lobbies were our social lifeline. However, as life progresses, schedules no longer align as they once did. People get jobs, move, build families, or simply burn out. If you want to keep gaming as a long-term hobby, you need to enjoy your solo sessions too. Dive into stories that you can lose yourself in. Try out a new strategy game and exercise your mind. Or simply unwind with a brain-numbing relaxation game.

Remember, your gaming time is your time.

Always welcome a good deal

I’ve learned to embrace sales. Steam’s seasonal sales? Gold. PS Store flash deals? Never ignore them. If you’re curious about a game but unsure, consider waiting for the discount option. Some of my most cherished titles came from “eh, why not” purchases at 75% off. And if it doesn’t stick? At least you didn’t pay full price for the regret.

Your rank ≠ your worth

If you’re into competitive gaming, let me save you some stress early on: your rank doesn’t always reflect your skill.

You could be gold, carrying silver, or platinum, stuck in matchmaking hell. What matters more is your consistency, your growth, and whether you’re having fun. Stressing over MMR or ELO steals the joy. Learn, improve, but don’t let a badge define you.

You don’t have to finish every game

This one took me a while to accept. There’s a guilt that creeps in when you drop a game halfway through, especially if you paid for it. But here’s the truth: not every game will be for you. Some don’t age well, or maybe your curiosity didn’t carry you far enough. That’s okay. Your time is limited; spend it on games that bring joy, challenge, or curiosity. Forcing yourself to finish something just to say you did? That’s homework, not a hobby.

Play what you love. And when you’re older, maybe you’ll pass on your own tips while complaining about your knees, too.
