#SoITriedIt: Why Oblivion Remastered is a Must-Play for RPG Fans

Stop criminal scum!

I did play Skyrim back in my early high school days. But if I’m being honest, I didn’t know what I was doing. I remember getting to the Dark Brotherhood questline and stopping shortly after. I had no clue about builds or gear or what “shouting” was for; I just shouted people off cliffs because it was funny. But what I do remember was the fun, the chaos, and the immersion.

Fast forward to now: Oblivion Remastered. This was the gem I missed. A classic that older RPG fans hold close to their hearts. And since I was feeling curious, I figured, “Why not?”

Thirty hours later, and let me just say… I need more non-working holidays. This game is massive. I’m currently rolling a stealth archer. Yes, I know it’s the default “I want to be cool” build, but I’ve added a bit of charm to the mix. Imagine a stealthy charmer working his way through the lands of Cyrodil. I’m on my third contract in the Dark Brotherhood and just got my hands on a nice dagger. But I am still on the hunt for a decent bow, though.

And that’s what I mean—there’s so much content here, and I know I’ll eventually run into the endgame bow. I just need to marvel and enjoy the journey as I go through everything.

Anyways, back to the game. Graphically? I locked it at 60fps, 1440p with ray tracing on, and *chef’s kiss, it is gorgeous. The wilderness is alive, the music is perfectly atmospheric, and I wander around more often than doing quests. Regarding density, it’s no Red Dead Redemption 2 or Witcher 3, but it holds its own.

But you know what really surprised me? The characters. They’re absolutely unhinged—and I love it. You could max out someone’s disposition toward you and then hear them mutter insults as you walk away. It’s so wonky and awkward that it’s charming. I later discovered that while the visuals were revamped, many AI mechanics remained untouched, and honestly? I’m thankful. I feel like I can connect with the gamers of the past who enjoyed this game.

The developers clearly knew what made Oblivion special and polished it just enough to stand next to modern titles without losing its soul.

If I had any gripe, the NPCs seem way too perceptive. My stealth game isn’t bad, but some characters—like this Gromm guy from Contract—were spotting me like they had Spider-Man senses. Frustrating? Yes. But I’m guessing that’s more of a me issue than the game’s.

Overall? Oblivion Remastered is not just a love letter to longtime fans—it’s an invitation to new ones like me. If you haven’t played it before, it’s worth diving into. Just ensure you’ve got some time off, because once you’re in… you’ll want to stay.

With the amount of keys you will be pushing in the game for magic, for the map, for third-person viewing, it will be 10 times easier if you can allocate some inputs on your mouse. If you are looking for your next upgrade that would help with that, feel free to check out the Logitech G502 Lightspeed available at the Next Upgrade Shop!
