Smart assistants have been around for years. They've been convenient and reliable, but they haven’t exactly broken new ground for quite some time. All that may change with Amazon's newest update—Alexa+, the long-awaited shift from ‘smart’ to truly ‘intelligent’.

We had a feeling in our article 'How ChatGPT's Advanced Voice Mode Can Be the Next Upgrade for Smart Assistants' that this was the obvious direction this technology would take, and it’s finally happening. Alexa+ is Amazon’s latest and most advanced AI-powered upgrade, designed to go beyond basic voice commands and timers. Built with an upgraded AI engine, Alexa+ is advertised to understand context, adapt to user preferences, and engage in more natural, flowing conversations. It's an enhancement available to Amazon Echo Show users via subscription, but currently only rolling out in the U.S. There’s no word yet on when it will reach our shores, but its capabilities are definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Context-Aware Conversations

Gone are the days when smart assistants could only understand limited voice commands. Alexa+ is designed to understand and remember previous interactions within a conversation, enabling a more natural dialogue. For example, if you ask, “What’s the weather like tomorrow?” and follow up with “And what about this weekend?” Alexa+ understands that you’re still talking about the weather. This level of contextual awareness makes conversations smoother and eliminates the frustration of having to restart with new queries every time.
Contextual Awareness Beyond Conversations
Moreover, Alexa+’s contextual awareness goes beyond its interactions with you. It extends to its interactions with your smart home. Amazon says that Alexa+ has the ability to recognize smart tech that’s part of your smart home, and can intuitively identify which device would best fit in context, even without identifying those particular devices.
Personalized AI Suggestions
Alexa+ is also said to be designed to learn from your habits and tailor recommendations based on your routines. If you regularly ask for a news update at 7 AM and turn on the coffee maker at the same time, Alexa+ might suggest combining those actions into a single morning routine. It can also prompt you to edit those routines based on your schedule. Leaving for a holiday? Alexa+ will ask if you want to turn off certain routines while you’re away to save energy. Over time, it’s even said to be able to refine its suggestions based on your preferences, making it feel less like a generic assistant and more like your own personal J.A.R.V.I.S.

Speaking of Marvel’s J.A.R.V.I.S. as a benchmark, Alexa+ is probably the closest we’ve come so far in achieving the AI Butler. Alexa+ was shown to be capable of going beyond simply controlling your smart home. Need to book a Grab? You can tell Alexa+ where you’re going, and it can book the Grab for you. Want food delivered? Place your order via Alexa+. It offers a level of convenience that our current Smart Assistants are nowhere near achieving.
