Cool air equals a cool mind.

If you're from the Philippines, especially Manila, you know how much it sucks if a place doesn't have an air conditioning (AC) unit. You feel gross, grimy, and sticky, which keeps you from working your best.

This article is intended for those building their first home, moving into an apartment, or simply looking for a small upgrade. It’s time to familiarize yourself with the different types of AC units that might suit your space.

This is probably one that most of us grew up with. It may even be the one you are currently using. This boxy unit is installed through a hole in the wall or a window frame—surprise, surprise. It’s cost-effective, easy to maintain, and perfect for small rooms or studio-type setups. But it’s not always the quietest or most energy-efficient. But if you live alone in a small apartment, this is still a solid option. Just check the one that fits your needs, maybe like the Hyundai Window Type HAC-W05M.

These units are sleek and relatively quiet. They consist of an indoor unit that blows the cool air and an outdoor unit that basically does the heavy lifting. Cooling for this type of AC is way more efficient and is used for medium to large rooms. They also tend to come with inverter tech, which helps save on electricity in the long run.

So, where is this AC best used for? If you are setting up your forever home or upgrading, this is an option worth considering.

Portable Units

Do you love the idea of “Plug and Play”? This type requires no installation; it just works. Portable ACs are ideal for renters or folks who don’t want to drill holes into walls. Note that they’re not as powerful as split or window types, and you’ll need to route the exhaust hose out a window. But for temporary setups or cooling small areas, they get the job done. If you have an outdoor business, you can set up this area in a tent for shoots or pop-up events.

Standing Units or Ceiling Cassette Units

I knew about Standing units, but the Cassette ones were a different thing (I didn’t know that was what they were called). However, these units are the powerhouses of the AC world, as they are often used in multi-room homes or commercial spaces. Ceiling cassette types are mounted in the ceiling and distribute air evenly across the room, while standing units are perfect if your home lacks wall space. These were the ones used when I was in college, and my goodness, these were freezing cold.

Whatever you choose, ensure it fits your room size, is installed properly, and won’t make you feel like you’re freezing in one corner while sweating in the other. Comfort is the goal, so you can continue working or studying flawlessly.
