Let’s address the blue whale in the room. The big, artificially intelligent whale that seems to be taking the world by storm. We all know how fast-evolving AI is, how it has integrated itself into our every day—how ChatGPT became our main consultant for information or content creation. It is evolving so fast that a new contender has entered the ring, a contender from China called Deepseek AI. But what is it exactly, and how does it compare to ChatGPT?

I have to give context about the whole fiasco with the  U.S and how TikTok was banned for a whole 15 hours before it resurfaced. The reason being the discrepancy between privacy and its relation to China—even if its CEO was from Singapore. Well, its back now, and the Internet believes that it was only taken down in the first place because it was “Chinese” spyware.

Well, this AI model was Chinese-developed and has drawn its own share of attention for its efficiency. 

However, controversy surrounds its training methods alongside its cheap price availability. Reports suggest that Deepseek AI may have used distillation techniques, a process where a model is trained using data generated by an existing AI (like ChatGPT), raising ethical and legal concerns, with some experts debating whether this crosses the line into unauthorized knowledge extraction.

So, what’s different?

ChatGPT is developed by OpenAI, a U.S.-based company, while Deepseek AI is China’s own homebrew. Additionally, OpenAI was trained using proprietary datasets while Deep is “rumored” to have leveraged distillation techniques that sped up its development. Please note that these are just rumors though. 

Lastly, Deepseek is praised for achieving strong performance while using fewer computational resources. OpenAI, meanwhile, has invested heavily in high-end infrastructure to push limits. But as far as clear differences, it is way too early to determine that.

Deepseek AI is an interesting development in the AI space, and its rapid rise proves that competition is heating up—it’s so rapid that I can barely get anything out of it due to overloading services.

But. With questions surrounding its training methods and ethical implications, it’s clear that this isn’t just about technology—it’s about how AI models should be developed in the first place. So, let’s just see how things pan out.
