Earphones go in the ear, simple and effective, and that’s how things still go today. But sometimes, it isn’t exactly comfortable having a device constantly in your ear for 3-4 hours a day because fatigue does happen. This is why bone-conduction audio technology has risen!
Is it a gimmick, or is it practical to the extent that it may be your next daily driver? Stick around because we will uncover and give an overview of this tech.
What is bone-conduction audio?
Unlike regular headphones, which block or cover your ears, bone-conduction audio uses vibrations to transmit sound directly to your inner ear. If we were to be a bit more graphic, it is a technology that sends vibrations directly through your skull. This means your ears stay open, allowing you to continue hearing ambient sounds while enjoying your hot song of the week, like APT by Rosé and Bruno Mars.

The idea might sound futuristic, but it’s rooted in practicality. By bypassing the eardrums, bone conduction is a game-changer for those who need to stay alert. A cool thing about this product is that it can also cater to those with specific hearing impairments, as the vibrations provide an alternative way to experience sound.

I have dabbled in this type of technology and urge those interested to demo it when possible. Yes, it is an excellent device, but it will take some getting used to. I should also point out that it isn’t optimal when the environment is extremely noisy. It’s sublime when you are on your morning run, but it can be hard to listen to during the 6 p.m. rush hour.
Just something to keep in mind—wink.
