Smart Ways to Prepare for Floods
Sometimes we gotta take matters into our own hands…

Flooding in the Philippines isn’t new… It’s been here ever since I was born, ever since my parents were born, and so on. The Metro and the surrounding cities suffer from knee-deep floods, and there hasn’t been any “real” change. While waiting for the government to actually step up, sometimes the smartest—the only move for now—is to prepare on your own.
And yes, that means turning to both smart devices and simple, practical habits.

Sometimes the first few drops that sneak into your home are the ones that do the most damage. By the time you notice, it’s already too late. The Aeotec Water Sensor 6 takes care of that by acting like an early warning system. It’s small and discreet, you can place it in areas prone to leaks or flooding, like under sinks, near doors, or by your washing machine. Once it detects water, it alerts your phone instantly. That gives you time to react before the water gets any higher.

Sandbags do the job, but sometimes you need extra protection. Modern flood barrier doors give you a much more reliable way to block water from entering your home. This bad boy is designed to seal tightly and can withstand strong pressure; these barriers can be installed permanently or set up when heavy rains are imminent. For homes in flood-prone areas, investing in one is like buying peace of mind.

Of course, gadgets and barriers only do half the job—you also need your own game plan. Start simple: keep an emergency bag with clothes, documents, food, and flashlights ready. If you’re in a multi-story house, designate safe spaces upstairs for storage and evacuation. For those in apartments or single-level homes, coordinate with neighbors; sometimes the best prep is a shared one. And don’t underestimate the power of just keeping informed—apps like PAGASA and local weather trackers can help you anticipate when to act.
Floods will always be part of our rainy season reality, but that doesn’t mean we have to sit and watch the water rise. With a mix of smart devices, protective gear, and common-sense planning, you can keep your family and your home a lot safer when the storms come rolling in. We have to look after ourselves for now as everything settles.
So stay safe, everyone.
