From Hype to Reality: The Discrepancy Between Game Promises and Launch Outcomes

December 18, 2024 / by Louigi Balao / 4 mins read

Video game development is a complex process, and as a result, the final product can often differ significantly from what players were initially promised. Several factors contribute to this discrepancy, including time constraints, technical limitations, engine incorporations, or even ”misguided ambitions.” These elements can all affect the outcome of the game. Given this context, there have been titles that have surprised their eager fan bases, leading to backlash and disappointment. Let's explore notable titles that underwent significant changes before and after their releases.

Cyberpunk 2077 - From an ambitious tease to a buggy launch.

When CD Projekt Red first unveiled this title, it was categorized as a revolutionary open-world RPG that would reflect the future. Their numerous trailers showed a futuristic world filled with grit, literal human customization via Ripper docs, and a story that the player can engage at their own pace. Fans expected nothing less than a defining experience since they are the creators of the infamous Witcher 3.

However, the reality was a hard crash. Upon release, Cyberpunk 2077 was riddled with bugs, crashes, and sickly performance issues—especially on last-gen consoles. The immersive world that the players were promised felt incomplete and dead, with AI behavior and in-game systems falling short of expectations. The backlash was swift, with Sony even temporarily pulling the game from its digital store. CD Projekt Red has since worked tirelessly to patch and improve the game, but the damage was done.

No Man’s Sky - Limited horizons galore.

No Man’s Sky is another infamous case of a game that promised the world—quite literally. Developed by the small team at Hello Games, No Man’s Sky was pitched as a space exploration game with infinite generated planets to discover. Players were shown trailers with diverse ecosystems, dynamic weather, multiplayer interactions, and a true sense of exploration.

But, at launch, many of these promised features were absent. What did we get? Planets that were repetitive, uninspired biomes, and a nonexistent multiplayer function.  Players felt betrayed, and No Man’s Sky quickly became the poster child for underdelivering on promises.

Anthem -  An unfulfilled next-gen shooter promise

Anthem, developed by BioWare, was supposed to be the next big thing in online multiplayer shooters. The early footage showcased breathtaking environments, fluid combat, and seamless cooperative gameplay. Players were particularly excited about the Javelins, customizable exosuits that allow them to soar through the skies and take on enemies with unique abilities.

However, when Anthem launched, it quickly became apparent that the game didn’t live up to its potential. The game felt unfinished, with repetitive missions, lackluster loot systems, and a storyline that failed to keep people in. The beautiful world felt hollow, and the much-hyped exosuit mechanics didn’t have the impact players had hoped for. Anthem struggled to retain its player base, and despite BioWare’s promises to fix the game, it eventually faded into obscurity.

Don’t get me wrong—these games are in a much better place now than they were at launch, but they serve as examples that highlight the line between hype and reality when it comes to game expectations.
