Sequel Counter: Video Game Franchises with the Most Iterations

December 11, 2024 / by Louigi Balao / 4 mins read

When it comes to long-running video game franchises, the gaming landscape is filled with them. Developers or publishers think that if they have a good IP going on for them, it should continue; the same mindset is shared with the gaming community because they enjoy these titles. Some of these franchises have spanned decades, delivering numerous sequels, reboots, and even spin-offs. Are they all good? Maybe, maybe not; that will be up to the player.

But one thing is for sure. They have stood firm against the test of time. The question now is, who holds the title of most iterations? Let’s find out.

Call of Duty

Just like their numerous titles, Call of Duty (CoD) has had multiple developers since it started with Infinity Ward, then by Treyarch, and then Sledgehammer Games. CoD first hit the shelves back in 2003, beginning as a World War II shooter. From there, they have evolved into one of the most popular franchises in gaming history.

The franchise is known for its fast-paced multiplayer mode, which nurtured its own share of iconic memes, lobbies, playstyles, and many more. Because of their popularity, they were able to explore various historical and futuristic settings that catered to different fans. As of 2024, the main series boasts over 19 primary titles, with yearly releases. If we are bringing in spin-offs, mobile games, and remastered editions, CoD’s iterations are well into the 30s.

Ah, Ubisoft is an institution that makes “interesting” decisions for its games, such as the subscription services of its Rainbow 6 title. They may be interesting when it comes to decisions, but there is no doubt that they have developed a popular franchise known for its hooded heroes in compelling and historically accurate settings. Yes, we are talking Assassin’s Creed

Each game is set in a different period, ranging from the Crusades to Ancient Egypt. Assassin’s Creed has garnered 13 mainline titles and numerous spin-offs, including handheld and mobile gaming. Considering the remasters and expansions, the game has well over 20 iterations, further cementing its status as one of the most enduring game franchises.

Resident Evil

I may not have played CoD or Assassin's Creed during my youth, but I remember playing a number of Resident Evil games. Developed by Capcom, this survival horror franchise began its terror around 1996. The series follows various protagonists as they uncover and combat the sinister Umbrella Corporation's experiments. As a kid, this was the absolute S&!T since it felt fresh then.

No, the main series consists of 11 titles, but when you include other versions and their own spin-offs, the count approaches the 30s.

Super Mario

We are onto the big player with Super Mario. Created by Nintendo, this title is arguably the most recognizable and beloved franchise. Beginning with Donkey Kong around 1981, when Mario first appeared, he continued his adventures throughout the years as a plumber, a baseball player, a go-kart driver, a soccer team, the list goes on–the series has expanded beyond traditional platformers to include a variety of genres.

As of 2024, there are over 20 mainline Super Mario games, with countless spin-offs and sub-series, including the Luigi’s Mansion and Mario Party games. But when considering all Mario-related titles, the number exceeds 200, making it the most prolific franchise in gaming history. 200 hundred titles, hats off to you, sir!

Each of these franchises has significantly impacted the gaming industry, offering countless hours of entertainment to millions of players worldwide. While Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, and Resident Evil boast impressive numbers of iterations, none come close to the sheer volume of games under the Super Mario banner.
