The Undead Joy of the Zombie Genre: Top Zombie Games to Play

November 15, 2024 / by Louigi Balao / 4 mins read

The zombie genre in gaming has an undying appeal as it blends subgenres that include survival, horror, and action—a perfect avenue for most gamers. Be it Plants Vs. Zombies or Left 4 Dead as your starting points in this thrilling genre; if you wish to expand and try out similar games, aim for this upcoming list.

Project Zomboid
PC

From Steam Official Website

This bad boy is currently on my wish list, and it's a hardcore survival zombie game—it is hardcore, in my opinion. Like other zombie games, players are displaced in a world overrun by zombies, but unlike other games, Project Zomboid emphasizes realism. Players must manage hunger, thirst, fatigue, temperature, and even mental health. The game's isometric view and detailed mechanics provide a refreshing splash of challenges that can lure those who prefer a “difficult” experience. Even the zombies here are tough to kill if they come by the dozens. So call in the lads and try this game out!

World War Z
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Switch

Have you read the book or watched the film World War Z, where zombies can sprint at you and even scale great walls? Where do humans turn into these undead killers after a few seconds? If the answer is yes, I am pleased to share that there is a game like that. If you answered no, don’t worry; this banging game is a joy to play alone or with friends. The game is a fast-paced, third-person shooter with a standout feature that can render hundreds of zombies on the screen simultaneously. If you saw the movie, it is just like that—sick! Because of this feature, it drives intense and stressful combat situations that require full cooperation with the team. Just be warned that whenever you bump that difficulty level, you may find yourself restarting.

Dying Light
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Switch

Running is synonymous with zombie games, and Dying Light takes survival to new heights. Set in a vast open world, the game combines first-person combat with awesome parkour-style movement that allows players to traverse the environment in their own way. Players scavenge daily for supplies, craft weapons, and accomplish easy missions. But by night, that is where fear dwells; just don’t be left behind.

The game’s storyline, side quests, and dynamic day-night cycle keep players engaged and on edge. Dying Light is a perfect blend of action, horror, and exploration that keeps players grappling from start to finish.

The Last of Us
PC | PlayStation

Alright, no list of zombie games would be complete without The Last of Us. This critically acclaimed game from Naughty Dog is as much about its gripping narrative and character development as it is about surviving in a post-apocalyptic world. Players follow Joel and Ellie, two survivors navigating a world devastated by a surprisingly realistic fungal infection that turns people into zombie-like creatures. The game’s emotional depth, realistic combat, and great cast set it apart from other titles in the genre. The Last of Us is a masterclass in storytelling, offering a hauntingly beautiful experience that stays with players long after the credits roll. If you're hooked on the first, you must also continue with the second.

You may like undead zombies, but I am sure you dislike the idea of dead devices. If you want to reduce your worry about thunderstorms, electrical fluctuations in your home, or simply an increase in the electric bill, you can equip your home with a smart plug. With these devices, you can turn things off in a jiffy with a simple tap of your phone. If you don’t know where to start, check the assortment available in the Next Upgrade Shop, like the Crabtek Smart Plug Adapter
