Unconscious Habits Gamers Often Do

November 14, 2024 / by Louigi Balao / 3 mins read

Imagine this: you're deeply engaged in an intense gaming session, fully immersed in the virtual world. As you await the next quest or plot twist, you enter a loading screen and suddenly realize you've been mindlessly pounding the enter key for the last minute.

Sound familiar? Everyone has unconscious habits, whether it's biting the end of a pencil or cracking knuckles. Even gamers are no exception, often exhibiting quirky behaviors while deeply focused on their games. That is why we will list these quirky behaviors you may be doing.

Spamming keys. Ever caught yourself repeatedly hammering the enter key? It’s as if the more you press it, the faster or more effective its input becomes, right? The same goes for pressing it harder than before; it feels like your punches become heavier. Whether impatiently waiting for your loading screen, respawning, or hitting combos, gamers unconsciously spam their keys or press them harder when immersed in their game. Who needs a stress ball when you have your controller or keyboard?

Testing team damage. ’m sure this has happened at least half a dozen times in our gaming experience—me for my case with Rainbow Six—but this habit is something humorous and detrimental. Realism is one of the great features that gamers seek when playing games, especially in competitive genres. Why? The consequences of actions in the heat of battle; that is what makes a game thrilling with friends. But, sometimes gamers take it upon themselves to conduct a “harmless” experiment to see how much damage is DAMAGE.

It may be an impulse or a devious way to get back at a friend, but regardless of what, this is one habit that can make the discord lobby chuckle.

Exploring forbidden areas. If there is a road, there is a way, even if a blatant sign says otherwise! The allure of forbidden territories in games, potentially hiding rare loot, is irresistible for many gamers. Despite warning signs, they'll explore every interactable door or hidden path, risking encounters with powerful foes or discovering hidden treasures.

You either get a rare item or fight something you shouldn’t fathom beating just yet.

North-anchored map, please! This might be a hot take, but this is an unconscious habit that some gamers do whenever they play an adventure game. And because of these various virtual landscapes, gamers feel compelled to anchor their maps due north—as if it was hardwired to seek comfort in familiarity. Regardless of the reason, sometimes it just much more convenient to have something static when everything is moving around.

Inventory organizing obsession. For certain gamers, the real challenge lies in meticulously organizing their in-game inventories. From alphabetizing items to color-coding for aesthetics, they indulge in hoarding and organizing, often mirroring real-life tendencies.
