Unwritten Laws of Gaming: Essential Guidelines for Every Gamer
December 18, 2024 / by Louigi Balao / 3 mins read

Gaming is a constantly evolving field with its own rules—some shared between various games, while others are specific to certain titles. These "unwritten laws" have become widely recognized as essential guidelines for gamers across different cultures. In part 2 of this article, let's explore more of these unwritten laws. Let's get started!
Take the least obvious path first. When faced with a fork in the road—one clearly marked with shiny loot and the other shrouded in mystery—most gamers will know exactly what to do: go the mysterious route. While progressing along the obvious path is tempting, the hidden route might lead to something better or, conversely, completely waste your time. At least you know what you will discover instead of itching in your subconsciousness, plus there may be a good chance for easter eggs or a hidden questline.

Respect the players who take on support class and prioritize them as targets. The support class is often the unsung hero of any game since they are typically the role people don’t bother with; it may just be the playstyle, or they find it boring. They heal, shield, and babysit the team as everyone struggles for victory.
They deserve our respect. They also deserve to be targeted first in the chaotic battle. It's a rule: “Take out their healer first.” It's ruthless, but it's just culture at this point for every gamer out there. Plus, the tank will be less confident in their plays.
If someone rapidly brandishes their weapon, they are friendly. Communication is vital for multiplayer games, but sometimes, you can’t communicate with the opposing team or someone who doesn’t have a mic. So, what's the universal sign of friendship? Either brandishing the weapon fast or spam crouching. It's the equivalent of a friendly wave. So if you see someone spamming their weapon animation, it’s a signal that they come in peace; just make sure to do the same so that they know that you, too, are friendly.
Test fall damage before exploration. Before heading off to your epic adventure, there’s one crucial thing you must do: go to the nearest building and jump off its ledge. Why? Because understanding fall damage is essential to your survival—ironic, I know! You’ve got to know how far you can fall without your screen fading to black; call it a calculated leap to limit testing yourself. It’s better to find out early than later.
39/40 bullets left? Press R to reload. One bullet short of a full magazine? Now that’s an emergency. An unwritten law dictates you must reload even if you’ve only fired one shot because you may need that bullet. So it’s either dying because you were short on ammo or dying because you're in the middle of the reloading animation.
