Debunking More PC Building Myths: What Every Builder Needs To Know

December 19, 2024 / by Louigi Balao / 3 mins read

Let’s jump into adult Lego once more! Building a computer can feel like a maze of tech, struggle, and opinions, thanks to the comments of others you see online. But, in this part 2, we will dive once more into the common misconceptions that will make you informed as a builder. So take a deep breath, and let’s get started!

More RAM is always better.

It's a common misconception that adding more RAM will instantly boost your PC's performance. While having sufficient RAM is important, there's a limit to the benefits your motherboard can provide based on your setup. For most gaming builds, 16GB of RAM is ideal. Adding more RAM won't enhance game performance if the other components of your system can't keep pace. Unless you work in graphic design or video editing, extra RAM often results in unused memory, which translates to wasted money.

More fans equal better cooling.

Fans are an integral part of PC building; they offer the cooling required for the system. However, other than their function, they are also bought for the aesthetic features some come with, such as lighting. However, it's important to remember that more fans do not always equate to better airflow. If not oriented properly, additional fans can actually disrupt the airflow inside your case. In this situation, quality is more important than quantity. A pair of well-placed fans can be far more effective than a dozen flashy, illuminated fans that lack direction.

You might think a giant case means your components will stay cooler, but bigger isn’t always better. In fact, larger cases can sometimes have poor airflow if the fans aren’t set up correctly. Smaller cases with efficient airflow design can cool your system better than a hulking tower that just happens to have a lot of empty space. It’s not about size but how you use the space. A good note also to keep in mind is that better cable management will contribute to a better air flow—it’s hard but effective.

RGB improves gaming performance

Actually, there’s no myth here: RGB lighting does not improve performance. While it's fun to joke that sticking with the red color enhances speed, the reality is that RGB lighting won’t increase your frame rates or reduce load times. It certainly makes your setup look impressive, but the glow is purely cosmetic. Think of it as a way to boost the mood and enhance immersion in your gaming experience. Plus, with the holidays approaching, you can even use it as festive decor!

Are you feeling more informed and confident about your next build? Good! Being informed takes the load off when you are jumping into something, and the same applies when it comes to smart tech.
