Generative AI: The Next Upgrade To Your Smartphone

November 15, 2024 / by Karess Rubrico / 3 mins read

These days, AI has proven to be more than just a buzzword. Many of us have been directly or indirectly affected by this brand-new technology since ChatGPT was officially launched in November 2022. Now, generative AI has been used to make workflows more efficient–sparking controversy on potential ethical debates at the same time.

One of its most talked-about attributes is generative AI, where users leverage the technology to generate text, images, and other forms of data based on what is “fed” to them. With recent development strides, generative AI might be present on your next smartphone.

What does this mean for the next generation of smartphones, and how would this development change the game as we know it?

Redefining the user experience

Adding generative AI to your mobile device simply means giving you greater control over your smartphone’s functions and how you intend to use them. According to Yahoo! Finance, “generative AI-capable smartphones could improve multimedia content creation; enable fast photo and video editing; and provide better speech-to-text, translation, and enhanced gaming capabilities.”

The Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro were said to be the first smartphones to have built-in AI functions–powered by Gemini Nano, the search giant’s AI model for smartphones. One noteworthy feature this AI model can do is that it automatically summarizes voice notes you’ve recorded on your phone–even without an Internet connection. It also has impeccable photo and video editing capabilities, such as adjusting lighting functions, sharper imagery for moving subjects, and enhanced videos without graininess or camera shake. The Pixel 8 and 8 Pro also had the Circle to Search, which allowed you to encircle a specific object or item and instantly get Google Search results.

The Samsung Galaxy S24 series, on the other hand, launched in late 2023. These smartphones are powered by Galaxy AI, the tech firm’s proprietary AI software. Mobile devices under the Galaxy S24 umbrella also had Circle to Search and other generative media editing functions. However, Galaxy AI could also translate phone calls via Live Translate, and automatically generate the right responses for you with Chat Assist.

Getting deeper into the system

Meanwhile, the recently released Xiaomi 14 houses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, which was said to be efficient and powerful enough to execute AI tasks on your device without relying on the cloud. This is a huge stride in data privacy and security, as any information you key into it would remain exclusively on your device.

Now, you may be wondering where Apple fares in all of this. The company has not made any concrete announcements about generative AI on upcoming iPhones. However, we can safely predict that we may be able to see how the Neural Engine–machine learning cores present in Apple silicon notebooks–can be incorporated into future iPhone models.

That said, generative AI on your smartphone seems to be the future. We can also predict that our everyday tech companions might just end up being smarter, more intuitive, and better able to serve us in ways we never thought they would.
