Eyes front, back against the chair, elbows rested upon your desk. But where should you place your microphone?
Getting your microphone in its optimal position can improve sound quality, whether for content creation, Zoom meetings, or even casual gaming sessions. Different mics require different setups, and finding the right orientation also depends on the type of mic you’re using and the available space.
Knowing your mic type
Right, the first thing to consider is what kind of microphone you’re using, so check that old package or search for your mic on the Internet because that information is key. There are tons of patterns out there, but we are starting with the two most common ones: condenser mics and dynamics mics. Condenser microphones like the JLab Audio Talk are more sensitive and great for capturing detailed audio, which is ideal for podcasting, streaming, or ASMR content creation. On the other hand, dynamic microphones tend to pick up less background noise, making them suitable for louder environments such as live performances.

For condenser mics, you’ll want to place the mic in front of you, about 6-12 inches away, depending on your voice's volume. This setup works best when using a boom arm, allowing the mic to sit at face level without obstructing your desk. If you can’t acquire a boom arm, make sure the mic you have has a stand that can sit in the direction of you at least. Because of this, your mic has to be angled slightly upward or downward, depending on where it is, to minimize breath sounds or pops. You know, the words with Ps and Fs, because they tend to be annoying to listen to when picked up.
I keep my condenser mic on top of my monitor angled downward, which helps clear room on my small desk.
For dynamic mics, like the Fifine AmpliGame AM8, they work best when placed closer to your mouth, around 4-8 inches away—tight and personal. You can use a mic stand or a boom arm, but the key is to keep it close to capture your voice more directly. Consider positioning it slightly below or to the side of your monitor for a gaming setup, out of the camera’s view but still easily accessible. A suggestion would be a boom arm that can move in and out whenever need be because this type of mic truly shines the close it is to your lovely voice.

A boom arm is your best friend if you have limited desk space. It frees up your desk while giving you control over the mic’s placement. If you’re using a mic stand, try placing it off to the side but angled toward you. This allows for a cleaner workspace while maintaining good audio quality. A good orientation is a tucked position behind your monitor. It isn’t completely behind it, but just enough so the module will peek out toward you.
Make sure to check your space and microphone type, and use that information to help you create the perfect setup. Also, consider visiting the Next Upgrade Shop to explore our wide range of high-quality audio equipment and take your audio game to the next level!
