RAM & Memory for Processing: How to Differentiate the Two

The world of computers is filled with confusing terminologies that can be mistaken for one another. A good example is terms like RAM and memory; they are often used interchangeably but refer to different components. Understanding the difference can help you make informed decisions when upgrading, troubleshooting, or buying brand new. 

Let’s put what computer memory is into memory! 

The breakdown. RAM, or Random Access Memory, is like your computer’s short-term memory. It’s where your computer stores data and instructions it immediately needs when performing tasks such as loading a program or file.  Think of RAM as a system that handles programs and files simultaneously without slowing your computer down. 

So, if you have noticed reduced speeds in computer performance, you may want to check your RAM first because it handles multitasking and memory-intensive applications. Just note that RAM is volatile and loses data when the power is switched off. That’s why your computer needs a separate type of memory for long-term storage. 

Make sure to put this into memory! Memory, a.k.a. Storage, is where your computer stores data permanently until you decide to clean up—it stores data even when the system is off. There are different types of memory, especially in this modern age, because it includes hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), and newer Non-Volatile Memory Express solide-state drives (NVMe SSD); all which vary in speed, reliability, and most importantly, cost.

To give a brief overview of an example, HDDs use spinning magnetic disks to store data, while SSDs use flash memory chips for faster access times. The newer NVMe SSDs offer even faster speeds since it is connected directly to the motherboard’s interface—something that I need in my opinion. 

Now, when choosing between the two, this will of course be catered to your needs and budget. HDDs are typically cheaper and offer larger capacities, making them suitable for storing large files like videos and recordings. SSDs, on the other hand, are faster and durable which is a great future-proof purchase down the line. 

In conclusion. RAM and memory are both ESSENTIAL components of your computer since they serve different purposes. Again, RAM provides temporary storage for data and instructions that is needed quickly while memory is capable of storing data permanently.
