Things We Wish Our Smart Assistants Could Understand Better

The rapid growth of technology is astounding and scary at the same time. The old sci-fi movies we have come across have painted a picture of the future: flying cars, instant teleportation, and even android helpers. It is sad to say, however, that these elements are not reasonably “available” just yet, but at least we have our smart assistants.
Despite being simple, they have been a great addition to any smart household thanks to their many convenient features and connectivity. Sometimes, we just wish they could do more and understand us better, so we will list things we want our smart assistants to understand.
Local phrases “Hey, Google, paki-patay ‘yong ilaw.” This feature is indeed available but is still not as seamless as we want it to be. English is usually the go-to language for smart devices and the people who have incorporated smart devices into their household practice this. It’s just that sometimes, we want to be playful and talk to our smart assistants the way we would speak to anyone—in our native language.
Sometimes, it’s faster if smart assistants can fully understand it. Instead of “Hey Google, what time is it?” it can be fun like “Beh, ‘nong oras na?”
Emotional distress. Life is fast-paced, so the home is the sanctum of recharge. If you are living alone, you may sometimes need someone–or something—to lend an ear. One thing we wish our smart assistants could understand is our distress. It would be amazing if our devices could detect when we’re feeling down and offer a comforting word. “Hey Google/Alexa, I had a rough day.” After hearing that, they could offer jokes, memes, good news, or even a relaxing playlist you can chill to.
Sarcasm. Have you ever sarcastically called your furry friend the cutest ugly thing in the world? Sarcasm is just a tool that elevates emotion. Playfully receiving sarcasm can uplift the spirit, so we sometimes wish our smart devices could match our sarcasm. Imagine asking Google for the weather when it is raining outside, and it replies, “Oh, perfect weather to fly a kite,” with just the right amount of sarcasm.

It would add a touch of humor whenever we interact with our beloved smart devices.
While our smart assistants may not entirely be on the same wavelength as us yet, we can still dream. Maybe one day, they'll surprise us with their newfound understanding, empathy, and sarcasm. Until then, we'll have to keep hoping and maybe throw in a few more requests for sarcasm detection along the way. After all, a little humor never hurts!
