Evernote has been a reliable note-taking resource for many users in the years since it was launched. A free account allows you to create multiple notebooks and add an innumerable number of notes—and one of its best features is its browser extension, which allows you to clip any page and save it on any of your notebooks, so you can save the information for future reference.
However, in December 2023, the company announced that free accounts would be limited to just one notebook and 50 notes. According to Evernote, “any Free user who currently has more than 50 notes and one notebook will still be able to view, edit, export, share, and delete existing notes and notebooks.”
If you’ve been a longtime Evernote user, you may want to consider looking for other apps that have similar features. (Some even have enhanced functions that Evernote doesn’t offer!) Here are some of our note app recommendations, and why we think they’re worth it.
UpNote
Available on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android
Similar to Evernote, UpNote allows you to organize your notes via nested notebooks (with amazing designs!) and hashtags. The app also allows you to write and access your notes without an Internet connection and automatically syncs whatever’s created offline across all your devices. UpNote also has a web clipper where you can quickly save recipes, articles, and other pages with ease. Download UpNote from their official website.
Bear
Available on Mac and iOS
Tagging your notes just got easier with Bear! This simple Markdown note-taking app lets you work with lists, tables, and images all in the same note. Plus, you can easily organize your notes by adding hashtags to them. Its paid version allows you to export your notes into different file formats, sync them with iCloud, and even search for specific words on images and PDFs. Get Bear on your MacBook, iPhone, or iPad from the official Bear website.
Google Keep
Available on Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android
From Google Keep Official Website
Whether you have a random idea that popped into your head or need a quick reminder to run an errand, Google Keep has your back! This note-taking app has a simple and easy-to-use interface that lets you save notes via text, image, or audio. And while Keep doesn’t have folders or notebooks, you can easily “tag” them by color-coding. You can also easily share your notes with others and collaborate with them in real-time. Learn more about Google Keep on its official website.
