Head To Head: Battle Of The Cloud Storage Services

November 15, 2024 / by Karess Rubrico / 3 mins read

We’ve previously discussed the importance of cloud storage and why storing your files in the cloud is a great option for backups. This time, we’ll cover different file storage options that you can explore for your personal and business needs.

Check out these different cloud service providers (CSP) and what makes them stand out. (All best used with your fiber-fast home WiFi connection, of course!)

What should you look for in a cloud storage provider?

Before diving deep into CSPs, let’s cover some basics of cloud storage. Other than keeping your data and being able to share them easily, these services are typically great for collaboration, especially with the advent of remote work. Of course, there are other important factors to consider for your specific needs.

  • Security Data privacy has become a big deal nowadays, so it’s important to find solutions that keep your important files safe from breaches and other possible threats. Choosing a CSP that offers multiple layers of access protection, among other factors, ensures that your information won’t be leaked.

  • Reliability When looking for the right CSP, find one with a good track record of uptime, robust infrastructure, and minimal downtime. You’d also want to count on one with an easily accessible customer service team in case you have any inquiries or concerns.

  • Scalability Find a provider that offers a wide range of scalable options, such as adding and removing storage. Good CSPs also provide many perks with their paid services.

Cloud storage providers we recommend

Google Drive works best for those who already utilize Google Workspace apps in their day-to-day workflow. Drive is also built-in on Android devices, making it the automatic choice for transferring your mobile device’s files to the cloud. One clear advantage of this cloud storage service is that it lets you access your files offline–so you can do so, anytime, even without an Internet connection.

Google Drive’s free version gives you 15GB of storage across all their services. However, upgrading to their starter plan on Google One gives you 100 GB of storage for ₱889 a year. You can also share extra storage space with up to five family members without having access to each others’ files. What’s more, getting a Google One plan gives you extra editing features on Google Photos, so you can brighten faces, remove shadows, or blur backgrounds on your snaps. Learn more about upgrading to Google One at the official Google One website.

From Apple Philippines Official Website

iCloud is Apple’s exclusive cloud storage service for iOS and MacOS users. 5 GB of storage is available for free with each user; however, upgrading to iCloud+ makes it possible to access your files and backups across all your Apple devices. Starter plans for iCloud+ cost ₱49 a month for 50GB of storage, and additional perks include Family Sharing, Hide My Email (for those pesky spam emails), and HomeKit Secure Video (for storing footage from your home security cameras). Visit the Apple Philippines official website for more details on iCloud+.

Box is a great storage option for those looking for alternatives to Google Drive. Their free plan gives you up to 10GB of storage but only allows up to 250 MB for file uploads. If you have a small business, their Business Starter plan accommodates up to 10 users, gives you 100GB of space, and offers secure file collaboration. Subscribe to Box at their official website.
