How’s VR Doing: Is It High Time to Get Into It?

Is it time to grab a new set of eyewear?

The fantastic thing about the Apple Vision Pro is… hmm, its price. Jokes aside, VR is a stable medium for video gaming, my friend, and if you’ve been on the fence about getting into it, now might be a great time. Affordable, much more engaging, and promising—it isn’t Sword Art Online level yet, but it's still great.

The door is right here, and the Meta Quest 3S is opening it.

Not everyone can drop a fortune on a VR headset, BUT the PHP 20K of the Meta Quest 3S is arguably quite affordable. No need for a high-end gaming PC or a mess of cables—just put it on and start playing—or so it was advertised.

Meta has been pushing hard to make VR more accessible, and the Quest 3 has already proven that standalone headsets can be both powerful and user-friendly. The 3S delivers on its promise of affordability without compromising too much on performance, and it is the best way for newcomers to get into VR. Plus, with inside-out tracking and improved processing power, even a budget-friendly model will still offer a solid VR experience.

Start small, but start well is what I say.

Wait, did I just feel that?

Yep, you read that right. Seeing and hearing VR is one thing, but feeling it? That’s where things get interesting.

Haptic feedback technology is advancing rapidly, allowing users to experience touch sensations in virtual worlds. Devices like haptic gloves and vests are becoming more affordable, making it possible to feel in-game impacts, textures, and even resistance.

For example, VR shooters are already integrating haptic suits that let you physically feel gun recoil or enemy attacks. Racing simulators use haptic steering wheels that mimic real-world driving conditions. If you check out some random streams, there are also available walking rigs that allow you to walk yourself in the world. I mainly see this for Skyrim so you can just imagine the cardio you would be getting if you have the whole thing.

A new way to enjoy games.

A few years ago, VR felt like a tech demo playground—things you would see at themed parks, expensive malls, or only gaming conventions. That’s no longer the case. Big studios are finally treating VR seriously, and it shows.

We now have games like Half-Life: Alyx, which proved that VR can deliver AAA-level storytelling and gameplay. Resident Evil 4 VR took an iconic classic, making it even better with immersive mechanics. And then there’s Asgard’s Wrath 2, which brings full-fledged RPG mechanics to VR, showing that long-form, high-quality experiences are possible.

But it’s not just about single-player. Multiplayer VR is booming, especially with titles like Pavlov or Phasmophobia. Just remember that it takes some getting used to. My first time made me nauseous, so be warned.

If you want to take immersion further, but in the comfort of your home, the XReal Air 2 AR glasses are a great companion. What does it do? It lets you turn any space into a massive screen, perfect for gameplay footage or a quick gaming session.
