The Reality of 6G: Are We Ready for the Next Evolution in Connectivity?

Wait, my Mom just learned about 5G, now there is 6G?!

From LTE to 5G and now possibly 6G? Sometimes, re-explaining these things to the folks can take time, so I thought, “Why not make this into an article piece?”

So, what is 6G anyway?

6G, as the name suggests, is the next-generation wireless technology that’s expected to make today’s ultra-fast 5G look like a snail. While 5G gave us high-speed streaming, quicker downloads, and improved connectivity, 6G promises lightning-fast speeds (think 100 times faster than 5G), zero latency, and even teleportation! Scratch the last part, but it will be a vital element in future technology revolving around communication.

But do we need it?

In the Philippines, we’re still in the process of expanding consistent 5G coverage nationwide; yes, consistency! Sure, 6G’s promises are exciting, but the reality is that for most Filipinos, stable LTE remains a priority—heck, even just simple cell service.

That said, the potential benefits of 6G could be huge for industries like healthcare (think remote consultation during surgeries) or education, which can utilize VR technology. But for your average Joe, faster meme downloads might not be enough reason to upgrade just yet.

So don’t expect to see 6G pop up in your phone settings anytime soon—most experts predict a rollout around 2030. In the meantime, telcos in the Philippines are still expanding 5G networks and improving infrastructure to ensure everyone can actually use these next-gen services.

Long story short, we do not need it now, but maybe in a few years when the world is more connected. Until then, let’s focus on making 5G accessible to everyone. Truth be told, some phones do not have the option to switch to 5G. If you are one of those folks, you can grab a quick upgrade that accommodates these new networks, like the Infinix ZERO 30 5G. It’s simple, reliable, and not that expensive!
