Why It Is A Great Time To Get Into Gaming

They say gaming is dying, but I see it as the time for little guys to rise.

I remember when my parents would tell me to get off my PS1 to play outside, and as a response, I told them, “This is the future.” I then threw a tantrum because I didn’t want to play outside.

Gaming has always been a lively industry and had steady growth throughout the years. There was a boom in this medium in 2020, when almost everyone played some form of game. This meant industry giants were always starting up new projects and creating new games. But, let’s be honest: AAA games aren’t hitting the same these days.

Sure, they have massive budgets, stunning visuals, and all the marketing muscle in the world—like, for real, it's insane how much reach they get—but are they delivering quality? The gaming community seems to think otherwise, and I do, personally, as well. Many recent AAA releases have fallen short of expectations, offering recycled ideas and buggy experiences while carrying hefty price tags. They may be “triple A” in name, but the quality doesn’t always meet expectations.

While AAA games stumble, indie games are shining. These smaller, developer-driven titles are stepping into the spotlight, offering fresh and fun experiences. They aren’t a straight-up cash grab. Why? Because indie developers have less to lose and everything to gain. Without the constraints of corporate suits, they can take risks, push boundaries, and create games that truly are fun.

I may have stated fun twice in that paragraph, but it is an important note. Gaming should be fun.

Take hits like Until Then, Lethal Company, and Everholm—these are games made with passion, not just profit, in mind. Indie developers pour their hearts into their work, resulting in refreshing games.

If one of the reasons that gatekept you from gaming is price, you are in luck. AAA titles often come with price tags of ₱3,000 to ₱4,000, which isn’t feasible for everyone. Indie games, on the other hand, are typically priced much lower, often around ₱1,000 or less. With platforms like Steam, it’s easy to find hidden gems that fit your budget.

Indie games also excel at creativity. They’re not bound by the pressure to appeal to the masses, allowing developers to experiment with unique storytelling, new mechanics, and distinctive art styles. Titles like Stardew Valley show how indie games can deliver emotionally impactful and visually stunning experiences that are still a smash hit.

In contrast, AAA games often rely on established IPs and tried-and-true formulas. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with that, it limits their ability to innovate. For new gamers, accessing diverse genres and fresh ideas is key to discovering what they truly enjoy.

It’s the perfect time to start. With the gaming world shifting and indie developers taking center stage, there’s never been a better time to get into gaming. The combination of creativity, affordability, and accessibility ensures something for everyone.
